In the rapidly expanding eastern corridor of Kigali, the upcoming Kabuga Modern Market is emerging as one of the most significant urban redevelopment projects designed to modernize commerce, improve mobility, and support the growing population around the area’s new national referral hospital.

The project represents an upgraded and modernized version of the existing Gahoromani Market, transforming what was once a largely informal trading environment into a structured, weather-protected, and service-oriented commercial center. Designed to enhance trade efficiency and facilitate the increasing movement of goods and people, the development is expected to become a major economic and social anchor for the region.
Kabuga Modern Market is planned as a strategic urban hub where farmers, wholesalers, retailers, transport operators, and surrounding communities will interact within a more organized and efficient environment. The redevelopment introduces modern market sheds, modular stalls, circulation plazas, cold storage facilities, and cross-docking bays aimed at improving logistics and reducing post-harvest losses.
The project is closely aligned with the master plan surrounding the new national referral hospital and the broader eastern urban corridor. Urban planners envision a synchronized ecosystem where healthcare services, transportation infrastructure, and commercial activities reinforce one another to create a more connected and productive district.
Construction works and infrastructure development are being executed by UB Connect, whose scope includes the development of market structures, public circulation spaces, transport canopies, utility systems, and vendor relaxation areas designed to improve the working conditions of traders.
One of the project’s defining features is its phased delivery strategy aimed at minimizing disruption to ongoing commercial activities. According to the development plan, priority market sheds and transport connections will be completed first, allowing traders to continue operating while additional infrastructure is gradually introduced.
Future phases will include mezzanine storage areas, rooftop solar systems, civic amenities, and expanded public service facilities. Temporary stalls and digital trader registration systems are also being implemented to ensure continuity of business operations throughout the construction period.
The integrated management plan further incorporates bus bays, motorcycle transport stages, hospital-access logistics, and last-mile delivery systems intended to improve mobility and reduce congestion around the hospital zone and commercial precinct.
In addition, the market will feature cashless payment systems, digitally managed stalls, and CCTV-ready infrastructure aimed at strengthening operational accountability, safety, and modern business management practices.
Once completed, Kabuga Modern Market is expected to become a major catalyst for residential and commercial growth in eastern Kigali. Beyond providing dignified and modern working spaces for traders, the project is also envisioned as a welcoming urban gateway for patients, visitors, and commuters accessing the nearby healthcare facilities.
Urban development experts believe the transformation of Gahoromani into a modern commercial precinct reflects Rwanda’s broader vision of creating integrated, people-centered urban infrastructure capable of supporting long-term economic growth and sustainable city expansion.
