In 2023, during the episcopal anniversary celebration of Cardinal Antoine Kambanda held at Amahoro Stadium in Remera, the Archbishop of Kigali expressed his vision to construct a new cathedral for the city. The proposed structure is intended to be a modern and dignified house of worship that reflects both spiritual significance and contemporary architectural excellence.

This ambitious idea received strong support from the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, who attended the ceremony. He pledged his support for the project and emphasized the importance of selecting a prominent and meaningful location that reflects the cathedral’s value and purpose.
Reports indicate that the Catholic Church has already been allocated land formerly occupied by Nyarugenge Prison, originally built in 1930. This site will host the new cathedral. Architectural designs for the structure have already been completed, offering a glimpse into a modern and culturally inspired building.
Father Innocent Consolateur of St. Michel Cathedral Parish explained that the designs represent the vision for the project. He added that the official construction start date will be announced by Cardinal Kambanda.
The new cathedral is expected to accommodate at least 5,000 seated worshippers. Additionally, during major religious celebrations, its extended grounds will be capable of hosting between 10,000 and 20,000 people.
A distinctive aspect of the project is its integration of Rwandan cultural identity into the architectural design. While maintaining the traditional structure of a Catholic cathedral, the building will incorporate elements that reflect Rwanda’s cultural heritage. This vision was first highlighted by Cardinal Kambanda in 2020, emphasizing the importance of blending faith with national identity.
According to the Rwanda Development Board in 2023, efforts are ongoing to raise over 40 billion Rwandan francs required to fund the construction of the cathedral.
Currently, Kigali’s main cathedral, located in Kiyovu at St. Michel Parish, was established in 1963 and officially became a cathedral on May 3, 1976, following the creation of the Archdiocese of Kigali. However, due to the city’s rapid growth and the increasing number of faithful, the existing structure is no longer sufficient to host large-scale religious events.
The construction of the new Kigali Cathedral is expected to mark a significant milestone in strengthening faith, promoting cultural identity, and advancing modern architecture in Rwanda. It will also play a key role in transforming the urban landscape of Kigali in a sustainable and meaningful way.
